Joedance Film Festival selects nine local films for 2014 Festival

FRIDAY (Film Showings begin at 9 p.m.)

  • Filius (Rolando Gil Rosario, writer/director) (9:25 length): short film that follows a Puerto Rican owner of a aging hardware and convenience store who loses his daughter in an accident as he tries to cope with her death. Winner of Best Student Short Film at the Rincon (Puerto Rico) International Film Festival.

  • POP (Nicole Driscoll, director/producer) (4:37 length): short film in which an actress misinterprets a role when auditioning for a balloon popping fetish video.

  • The Bishop Boys (Andrew Huggins, writer/director/producer/editor) (6:41 length): short film that is a tale of three down-and-out brothers in search of some easy money, but making it together is what makes things go the hard way. Still, they’ll do this one last job…for Mama.

  • The Four Elements (Jordan K. Ellis) (6:30 length): experimental short film meditation on the worldʼs four elements: Air, Water, Earth & Fire.

  • Overcoming Mountains (Joshua Marshman, director) (63 minutes length): feature-length documentary filmed while traveling 2,300 miles across China on bicycles. The three-person crew captured a story of human perseverance, interviewed people they met about their struggles, and discovered a motivational endurance to keep going. As they work to overcome the physical mountains confronting them along the road, the filmmakers shared something new about the hardships, fears, and difficulties we all face in our daily lives. Join them on their journey, and see just what it takes to be one of the few that are Overcoming Mountains.

SATURDAY (Film Showings begin at 9 p.m.)

  • The Horse You Rode In On (Joshua Yates, director/producer/DP/editor) (2:40 length): music video segment of a long-form music video exploring death, life and rebirth.

  • Destiny (Tom Olson, actor/writer/producer) (2:45 length): short film in which a man searches his heart to express his feelings for a co-worker via YouTube. Of course, things don’t go as planned and hilarity ensues!

  • Blue (Derek Donovan, director/DP) (25:00 length): short film about Jed, who lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his dog Blue. The film follows their relationship as it goes through changes and they learn how to live and let go.

  • Without Perfect Answers (Bruce Bowers, producer/director) (60 minutes length): feature-length documentary that takes a close look at the countryʼs foster care system. The story starts with The Crossnore School (a boarding school founded in the middle of the North Carolina mountains in 1913 to serve impoverished children of the region) and leads Bowers and his crew overseas to the Goldstein Youth Village in Jerusalem in search of answers. (Bowers is an Award-winning Charlotte filmmaker who produced “The Blue Ridge Parkway: The Long and Winding Road.”)

Jimmy Weller and SS Green Light Racing will welcome a new partner to their No. 08 Chevrolet Silverado at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway as Joedance Film Festival comes onboard for the annual event in NASCAR’s heartland.  The Charlotte-based film festival looks to raise funds and awareness for rare pediatric cancers, as well as support research and clinical trials at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.

“I’m really excited to have Joedance Film Festival on our truck this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” commented Weller.  “It’s a great organization focused on raising awareness and funds for a very important cause in pediatric cancer.  Through this initiative, I hope SS Green Light Racing is able to build even more awareness for Joedance, and help them increase the support they are able to provide to research and clinical trials at the Levine Children’s Hospital.”

The Joedance Film Festival was founded on July 6, 2010 in memory of Joe Restaino, a movie lover, who passed away after a four-year battle with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) at the age of 20.  Designed to showcase original film entries from Charlotte’s film industry producers, writers and directors, the Joedance Film Festival is held annually during the first weekend of August in the courtyard of the 10th Street Townhomes in Charlotte’s Fourth Ward District.

“Our partnership with SS Green Light Racing and Jimmy Weller is so exciting for Joedance Film Festival,” commented Diane Restaino, President of Joedance Film Festival.  “We appreciate their support of our foundation and the opportunities this creates for Joedance as we continue to raise awareness of rare pediatric cancers.”

The North Carolina Education Lottery 200 is scheduled for Friday, May 16 at 8:30 p.m. ET.  FOX Sports 1 will provide live television coverage beginning with NCWTS Setup at 8 p.m. ET, which will include a feature story on Jimmy Weller. MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will also provide live radio coverage of the event beginning with a pre-race show at 8 p.m. ET.  Follow Jimmy Weller on Facebook (Facebook.com/JWellerRacing) and Twitter (@JWellerRacing) for updates throughout the week.

Mission: Remission 150 150 Joedance Film Festival

Mission: Remission

Funds were raised through official Mission: Remission T-shirt sales at the schools, and club, team, organization, student and family donations.

Student groups spent $100 to get their respective group’s name on the back of the shirt, and that effort raised more than $3,000. Nearly 95 percent of McCallie students purchased a T-shirt, raising another $8,600.

McCallie’s Middle School raised nearly $1,500 by accepting students’ donations. The three teachers whose classroom jars generated the most money got a pie thrown in their face by a student, more a treat for the students than the popular teacher.

Around 1,800 students from the two schools united March 19 for a 2.7-mile walk to raise awareness for the cause. The march started at the GPS campus and took the students through Chattanooga’s North Shore, across the Walnut Street Bridge, around the Tennessee Aquarium, up the twisting walkway toward Hunter Art Museum and the Art District and back across the Bridge before returning to GPS.

Student Councils from both schools organized the event and distribute the collected funds to a variety of charitable and research organizations at a later date.

Joedance Film Festival and Modern Salon Collaborate

Modern Salon & Spa offers hair, manicure, chair massages and makeup services in the hospital on a designated day every other month. The parents can enjoy these services while staying close to their children. All services are free.

The annual Joedance Film Festival, two weekend nights of movies and fellowship in Uptown Charlotte’s Fourth Ward neighborhood (10th Street Townhomes Courtyard), honors the late Joe Restaino to raise awareness and funds for rare pediatric cancers research – specifically sarcomas, blastomas and brain tumors. Joedance is also committed to raising awareness of the local film industry by showcasing only local films. The family chose a film festival to honor their son because of his love of movies.

Joedance raised $20,000 during the 2013 festival Aug. 2-3, a 614 percent increase from 2012 ($2,800). Both 2013 film festival nights were sell-outs.
